February 19 Meeting

posted Feb 6, 2013, 7:41 AM by Andy Arsenault   [ updated Mar 13, 2013, 1:00 PM ]

To my fellow ASHRAE members,

We’ve made to the half-way point and the heart of the AHRAE year.  I attended the ASHRAE Winter Conference in Dallas at the end of January and the trade show was spectacular.  Over 50,000 people attended.  I was also able to make the Region I dinner at Sonny Bryant’s Steakhouse (BBQ) and met with Joe Furman, Region I RVC and many others from the Northeast.  Our Maine Chapter was well represented in the buffet line.

Last month we had a wonderful dinner presentation from Lew Harriman, ASHRAE Distinguished Lecturer on how HVAC Systems Help or Hurt a Building.  Pictured below is Lew Harriman (Left) and our own Distinguished Lecturer, Bill Lotz (Right).  Thank you to everyone who attended and another thank you to those who emailed me the DL evaluation forms.  Lew scored very high with the chapter and we look forward to having him back again.

For our adopted Habitat for Humanity’s project in Freeport, the construction schedule is starting to come together.  We are looking at Friday or Saturday dates at the end of May through June for the Maine ASHRAE Chapter to be on site and help with framing and construction of the homes.  Also, from Chad Mullin at Habitat:   I wanted to let you know that we are looking into an alternative heating option. Upon receiving our energy model for each until, we realized that we were putting in boiler systems that are just too big for what we need. Therefore, we are not getting nearly the efficiency that the boiler can produce. We are considering moving to an electric heat pump instead. I was wondering if any of your members sell, design, or service these systems?”   If anyone has some input they would like to provide, please send me an email and I will get you in touch with him.
