Please join us for the first Maine Chapter ASHRAE meeting of 2012-2013.

DATE:              September 11, 2012

WHAT:             Tour and Presentation at Southern Maine Community College on their campus in South Portland, Maine.

The meeting will begin with an overview presentation at the McKernan Hospitality Center and continue with a tour of the Transportation Technology Building, Lighthouse Building and Sustainability Center. Following the tour, we will meet back at the McKernan Hospitality Center for a question and answer session and buffet dinner. Below is an overview of the innovative envelope and HVAC upgrades that will be featured:

Transportation Technology Building

·         The metal ties securing the brick veneer in place were deteriorating due to the salt air. In order to prevent further deterioration of the wall systems, the brick veneer was replaced with an insulated metal panel wall system.

·         A combination of solar thermal and solar PV panels were installed in the auto shop area to provide heated makeup air for the vehicle exhaust system and assist in space heating.

·         Hot water unit heaters in the auto shop area were replaced with gas fired radiant heaters.

·         The existing hot water boiler was replaced with a condensing gas fired boiler to serve the classroom and office spaces within the building.

Lighthouse Building

·         Full interior building renovation including an envelope upgrade to super insulated walls and ceiling.

·         Installation of a VRF Heat-Recovery HVAC system with a sea water cooled condenser.

Sustainability Center

·         Full interior building renovation including an envelope upgrade to super insulated walls and ceiling.

·         An ERV [Energy Recovery Ventilator] was installed for building ventilation.

·         A VRV A/C [only] system was installed for building cooling.

·         A condensing gas fired hot water boiler was installed to provide space heating for the offices and classrooms within the building.

The overview presentation and tour of the facilities will be conducted by the architects and engineer who designed the projects:

David Reinheimer, P. E. – Senior Mechanical Engineer at Harriman Architects and Engineers with over 33 years of design experience.

Mark Lee, AIA, LEED AP – Architectural Associate Principal at Harriman Architects and Engineers with over 18 years of design experience.
